Bagnères-de-Luchon, usually just called Luchon, lies in a wide green valley close to the Spanish border. The Romans bathed in its sulphurous springs, and in the 1800s it became one of the most fashionable spa resorts in France, earning the title 'Queen of the Pyrenees'.
In town
- Stroll the shady Allées d'Étigny, lined with cafés, to the thermal baths at the end, where the Vaporarium has a natural steam cave.
- Admire the villas and the old casino from the Belle Époque.
- Browse the Saturday market for local cheeses and charcuterie.
Lakes and walks
The Lac d'Oô, with its 275-metre waterfall, is about an hour's walk from the car park at Les Granges d'Astau. Higher up, the Espingo and Portillon lakes reward stronger hikers. The Vallée du Lys, the 'valley of hell' waterfalls, is another classic outing.
Superbagnères and Peyragudes
The plateau resort of Superbagnères looks straight at the glaciers of the Maladeta massif, and Peyragudes is just over the Col de Peyresourde.
Cycling
Luchon is a regular Tour de France stage town, with the Peyresourde, Port de Balès and Col du Portillon all starting nearby.
