Grandvalira stretches across the east of Andorra, from the French border at Pas de la Casa to the gondola at Encamp. Its lifts climb to around 2,600 metres, and a huge snow-making network keeps runs open from December to April. It's part of the Grandvalira Resorts group with Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís.

Where to base yourself

  • Soldeu and El Tarter: the heart of the area, popular with British skiers, with English-speaking ski schools and lively après-ski.
  • Pas de la Casa: ski-in, ski-out, duty-free shops and a party reputation.
  • Grau Roig: a handful of hotels right on the slopes, quiet at night.
  • Canillo and Encamp: cheaper valley towns linked by gondola.

The skiing

Most of the terrain is wide, cruising blue and red runs, ideal for intermediates. Beginners get excellent nursery areas, and experts find off-piste and steeper runs around Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa. There are terrain parks and night-skiing on some sectors.

Tips

  • Lift passes are often cheapest bought online in advance.
  • Avoid Spanish and French school holidays and Carnival week if you can.
  • Andorra's low taxes make ski equipment and après-ski drinks good value.
