The Benasque valley runs north from the gorge of Ventamillo towards the French border, surrounded by the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park. The town itself has a handsome stone centre and a buzz of climbers, hikers and skiers.
Aneto and the high peaks
At 3,404 metres, Aneto is the highest summit in the Pyrenees. The normal route from the Refugio de La Renclusa crosses a glacier and the narrow 'Puente de Mahoma' ridge, so it's for experienced mountaineers or guided groups. Posets (3,375 m), the second-highest peak, is a long but non-glacial alternative.
Easier walks
- The Forau d'Aiguallut, where a waterfall vanishes into a sinkhole, from the Besurta car park.
- The Ibones de Batisielles, a string of lakes under Posets.
- Riverside paths in the Valle de Estós.
Cerler
Just above town, Cerler is one of Aragón's highest ski areas, with long runs and good snow.
Villages
Don't miss Anciles, with its noble stone houses, and Sahún and Eriste further down the valley.
