This tiny walled village on a hill is crowned by the huge Cathédrale Sainte-Marie, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic, with a beautiful cloister open on one side to the mountains and finely carved Renaissance choir stalls. It's listed by UNESCO as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
Roman past
Below the village lie the ruins of Lugdunum Convenarum, a Roman town founded in the 1st century BC, with baths, a forum and a theatre. The Romanesque Basilica of Saint-Just de Valcabrère stands in a field nearby, built partly with Roman stones.
Tips
- Combine with the caves of Gargas, famous for their prehistoric hand stencils.
- Summer brings the Festival du Comminges classical music concerts in the cathedral.
