Mountain life in the Pyrenees revolves around the seasons, and the festival calendar follows.
Summer solstice fire festivals
Around 23 June, villages across Andorra, Aragón, Catalonia and the French Pyrenees light giant bonfires and carry flaming torches down the mountains. These summer solstice fire festivals were added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2015.
Flama del Canigó
On the same night, a flame is carried to the summit of the Canigou and distributed across Catalonia.
Fêtes de Bayonne
For five days in late July, Bayonne dresses in white and red for one of France's biggest street parties. See Basque coast.
Transhumance
In early summer, flocks and herds move up to the high pastures, often with village festivities; in autumn they come back down.
Food fairs
The Bayonne Ham Fair in spring, the Espelette Pepper Festival in October, and cheese fairs in the Vallée d'Ossau.
Winter carnivals
Carnival brings masks, bears and costumed characters to villages like Prats-de-Mollo and Bielsa.
