Montségur's ruined castle sits on a steep limestone peak, the 'pog', at around 1,200 metres. In 1244, after a ten-month siege, the Cathar stronghold surrendered, and more than 200 Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned at the foot of the hill.
The visit
A steep path climbs from the car park to the castle in about 30 to 45 minutes. The ruins you see today belong mostly to a later fortress, but the setting and views are unforgettable. A small museum in the village displays finds from excavations.
Tips
- Wear good shoes: the path is rocky and slippery in the wet.
- The site closes in bad weather and may close in winter.
- Combine with Foix, Roquefixade and the Gorges de la Frau.
