At 905 metres, La Rhune (Larrun in Basque) is the westernmost mountain of real note in the Pyrenees, straddling the French-Spanish border above Sare and Ascain. On clear days you can see the whole Basque coast from Biarritz to San Sebastián, and the Landes forest beyond.
The train
A wooden-carriage rack railway, running since 1924, climbs from the Col de Saint-Ignace to the summit in about 35 minutes. It runs from spring to autumn; buy tickets online to avoid long queues in summer.
Hiking up
Several paths climb the mountain in about 2 hours from Sare, Ascain or the Col de Saint-Ignace. Look out for pottoks, the semi-wild Basque ponies that graze the slopes.
Nearby
Visit Sare's caves and village, Ainhoa, Espelette and Saint-Jean-de-Luz on the Basque coast.
